Bethlehem is the kind of church that encourages you to ask questions about faith and explore how you can use your gifts to serve others.
I have been a member of Bethlehem for five years and am a second year student at Luther Seminary. For my cross cultural experience, I spent last summer teaching English to Chinese English teachers in Fujian Province. Our students wanted to improve their conversational English and learn songs and stories to use with their students. They loved "I'm a little teapot" because tea is such an important part of their culture. When we had porridge for dinner, we shared the story of "The Three Bears." I was later asked to tell the story in class. I discovered that I love teaching. It is inspiring people to want to learn more, which is much like pastors do.
Our students taught us about Chinese holidays and we shared American holidays with them. They asked what we do to celebrate Ground Hog Day and learned that we eat "shee-gau" (watermelon) for the 4th of July. I will never forget singing "Silent Night" with them on a hot summer afternoon! Because China limits mission work, we couldn't talk about faith but we could show God's love for one another.
