Amizade Global Service-Learning & Volunteer Programs - Cochabamba, Bolivia
In September 2009, I traveled to Cochabamba, Bolivia on a global volunteer trip and received so much more in return than my contribution to the building work project at an orphanage. A dear friend, Laurie Linnes-Bagley, a member of Bethlehem, planted the idea of a global service trip. Another friend's passion for her and her husband's commitment and service through partnering with Amizade and the various projects sponsored in the Cochabamba area, prompted us to take action and the rest is history. (God has a way of guiding you when you open your heart to new opportunities!)
How to sum up my experience during the global volunteer trip to Cochabamba, Bolivia - a grand adventure which touched my heart, challenged my senses, ignited my compassion, excited my intellect and allowed me to rediscover the essence of my values and my inner being.
The volunteers were varied in ages, personalities and backgrounds but we forged a cohesive team committed to working together for a common goal. The camaraderie was exceptional with friendships forged, lots of laughter, sharing of ideas and genuine respect for all. We all saw first hand the difference our involvement made in so many lives. Our volunteer service immersed us in the local community. Although the conditions weren't always ideal and the manual work was hard, we were also able to explore the culture through recreational activities and community events.
It was an experience that is best shared with others by encouraging prayerfully consideration of seeking your own "giving" opportunity. I'm happy to share more details with anyone who may be interested.
Open your heart and God will lead!
Peace, Valeria Christensen
